Life of Pi finds its cast!

Broadway's latest transfer from the West End, Life of Pi, has found its full cast

Alongside Abeysekera, Fred Davis and Scarlet Wilderink will also be joining the Broadway cast to recreate their Olivier-winning portrayal of Richard Parker, the enormous and ignoble tiger who shares the lifeboat with Pi. Abeysekera also received an Olivier Award for his role as Pi in a play that is as physically demanding as it is dramatically challenging. For much of the drama is between Abeysekera's Pi and the incredible puppet that depicts Richard Parker. This means we are reliant not only on Davis and Wilderink to bring him to life and make him convincing but also on Abeysekera's interactions with the puppet on stage.

And it works - SO well. The relationship and tension created between Pi and the tiger is heartfelt, palpable and real. We forget that we're watching rubber and wood, and instead are entirely convinced of the tiger's presence and danger, with stunning lighting and sound design helping to recreate the mood of the vast ocean they find themselves stranded on.

This stage adaptation of Life of Pi is a beautiful blend of excellent writing and innovative puppetry and design. It's creator's afford just the right touch to never let technical wizardry overshadow the incredible world created by Yann Martel's visionary novel. It is set to become a theatre classic in much the same way as The Lion King and Curious Incident both are.
