The Reviews For Heathers The Musical Are In!

Kevin, July 14th, 2025

A killer reception!

Sharpen those scrunchies - the murderously good Heathers: The Musical is slaying once more at New World Stages in New York, led by Tony nominee Lorna Courtney as Veronica Sawyer!

With snark and sass, the show takes place in the halls of Westerberg High, where it's still murder being a somebody, and being a nobody isn't exactly safe either. Featuring a book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O'Keefe, this production brings a wickedly fun new edge to a story that we can't stop loving to death.

The candy store's serving up some serious praise. Let's take a look at what the buzz is saying, because this revival might just be so very worth the hype.

Heathers Critic Reviews

"Above all -- and perhaps most importantly -- the show boasts more talent per square foot than almost any other show in New York City. At the top of the class is former "& Juliet" star Lorna Courtney, unleashing her unbelievable pipes and delivering a first-rate performance as Veronica Sawyer, an Ohio high school senior who is ignored by the "cool" crowd until she is suddenly adopted by the Heathers (a magnificently funny yet slightly scary McKenzie Kurtz, the excellent Elizabeth Teeter and the fine Kiara Lee, stepping in for Olivia Hardy), the trio of color-coordinated seniors whom almost everyone in school both loathes and admires." - City Tour NY

"Heathers the Musical pulls off that rare thing: indulging our craving for nostalgia and camp while also bringing fresh perspectives to familiar tropes. The show now turns on on one of the movie's other classic lines: "What's your damage, Heather?" In this spirited and spunky musical, though, the line is less of a cutting put-down than an appeal for connection amid the shared trauma endured by all high schoolers. That is, the damage that all of us carry around, like overstuffed bookbags with Trapper Keepers of suppressed anxiety spilling out." - Culture Sauce

"Think Beatles-level hysteriacollective shrieking, whooping, high-volume, delirious adoration. Plus, for many it's also a night of cosplay, so if you show up in knee-high socks, plaid, and ruffled, mini mini-skirts you will be among friends. Whatever Heathers: The Musical (New World Stages, booking to Jan. 25, 2026) is as a piece of theater, it is being fiercely embraced by its dedicated fan base as a phenomenon." - Daily Beast

"Beyond its sociological themes, Heathers is a ton of stylish, well-crafted fun with top-notch acting and top-to-bottom earworms. After intermission, the score grows darker and introspective, giving individual characters moments to unburden their hearts... Neat thing about Heathers: it may appear to be coldhearted and ice-blooded, but by the end, there's a thaw and everyone is part of the club." - Observer

"At the end of the day, Heathers is Big Fun and boy, are folks loving it. Having now gone twice since their return last month, both audiences were so rabid with screams and cheers for both iconic lines and even more iconic riffs, sometimes it was hard to hear the music. It knows what it is, and doesn't take itself too seriously." - Theatreley

"But, boy, when Heathers takes flight, it punches a hole through the roof. Candy Store' still grooves as a catchy paean to cruelty, and The Me Inside of Me' is ingeniously ironic... These two ballads herald a final 30 minutes ratcheting to a nail-biting climax." - New York Theatre Guide
