A Show Worth Talking About

It's back! The critically acclaimed Pre-Existing Condition has returned to New York, bringing not only a voice to victims of domestic violence, but a space for an important conversation to be had.

A New York Times Critics' Pick, this Tony Award-nominated play by Marin Ireland, directed by Tony Award nominee Maria Dizzia, takes an unfiltered look at the lasting impact of violence on the body and soul through the lens of a woman trying to move forward after a life-changing relationship.

With a star-studded cast including Lupita Nyong'o, Phillipa Soo, Susannah Flood, Hari Nef and Edie Falco, alongside returning favourites Dael Orlandersmith, Sarah Steele and Greg Keller, Pre-Existing Condition is now playing at Greenwich House Theater. But what have the critics had to say? Let's take a look...

Pre-Existing Condition Critic Reviews

"Lupita Nyong'o is phenomenal in domestic abuse drama. The Oscar-winning actor transfixes in Marin Ireland's masterfully nuanced play about a woman reeling from a toxic relationship" - The Guardian

"Having the right actress as "A" (future players in this run include Susannah Flood, Hari Nef, Edie Falco, and Whitney White) is the key to keeping the audience invested, and audiences who can see the show before September 28 will not regret having Nyong'o as its centerpiece." - Cititour NYC

"She also learns to reframe the central question of what she wants. Is it money? Revenge? Sympathy? To just get over it already? For Ireland, the act of writing this play of giving voice to women who find themselves in similar impossible circumstances suggests another path forward. Where shadows and nuance blur your vision, shed a searingly bright ray of light." - Culture Sauce

"Staging the action swiftly though gently, Dizzia makes smart use of design to accommodate the play's fluent structure. Set designer Cate McCrea presents a plain, sparsely furnished room featuring a scuffed baseboard, a vintage radiator and industrial carpeting that's seen decades of meetings. Isabella Byrd's sensitively shaded lighting design makes the room appear as needed or suggests other places. Casually dressed by designer Enver Chakartash, three excellent actors warmly bring to immediacy the various counselors, relatives, friends and first dates moving through the protagonist's troubled existence: Dael Orlandersmith, Greg Keller, and Sarah Steele." - New York Stage Review

"When I saw Pre-Existing Condition's world premiere two years ago at the now-defunct Connelly Theater, I thought it felt a bit too much like therapy in public. Yet I couldn't stop thinking about it. "This lives in my body now," says A of her experience. Revisiting the play helped me realize how much it has lived in my head." - TimeOut

"Pre-Existing Condition asks an important question: What happens to a woman after everyone else believes the worst thing has already happened? Ireland understands that the bruise may disappear long before the imprint does, and she is particularly perceptive about the humiliations, judgments and institutional indifference that can follow someone attempting to rebuild a life. What she has written is compassionate, intelligent and deliberately unresolved." - Time Square Chronicles
