The Phantom of the Opera to be laid to rest in New York

Broadway's longest-running show will shutter in February 2023 after celebrating a record-breaking 35-year run

A stalwart of The Great White Way since 1988, Andrew Lloyd Webber's gothic masterpiece cites a post-COVID decline in sales as the main reason for its upcoming closure, the plans for which were announced last week. Predictably, there has been an uptick in sales for the Broadway behemoth, but as of now, there are no signs that the decision will be overturned.

Swooping into Broadway's Majestic Theatre on January 26 1988, Phantom has since become synonymous with New York's theatre scene and is one of biggest selling musicals of all time. This shocking news ends the 80's British Invasion of Broadway, with other huge Brit shows, Cats and Les Miserables shuttering their juggernaught runs in the past decade.

Phans will likely still be able to catch the show on tour across the country, but where the future lies for this storied production is unknown. Producer Cameron Mackintosh seems confident that this isn't the end though, telling the New York Times "I'm sure 'Phantom' will come back at some point. After I took 'Les Miz' off, it came back twice!" Here's hoping!
