About Chess on Broadway

Despite its abrupt endgame, the revival proved far more successful than the musical's original 1988 Broadway engagement. By closing night, Chess will have played 34 previews and 241 performances, a major victory compared to the original production's 17 previews and 68 performances.

The production earned five nominations at the 2026 Tony Awards, including acting nods for Nicholas Christopher, Hannah Cruz, and Bryce Pinkham, along with nominations for lighting design and orchestrations.

Created by Tim Rice alongside Benny Andersson and Bjrn Ulvaeus of ABBA, Chess first began as a 1984 concept album before evolving into a stage musical. Set against the tensions of the Cold War, the story follows rival American and Russian chess champions battling both across the board and over the same woman.
