Oklahoma! may have revolutionised the musical in 1943, but the preceding decade saw a number of show experimenting with the form. Rodgers and Hart's I Married an Angel is one such example, bringing together a comedy of manners and extended dance sequencers choreographed by the New York City Ballet great George Balanchine.

Dubbed by The New York Times as "a mixture of 'Candide' and Samuel Beckett viewed through Lewis Carroll's looking glass", Promenade is the most experimental revivals of this season's Off-Center season. It focuses on two unnamed prisoners who escape from jail into an evil world, where they encounter all kinds of allegorical figures and tales.
