Faydra

Faydra at New York City Center

Why see Faydra?

World Premiere Starring Julianne Moore

Manhattan Theatre Club hosts the world premiere of Faydra, a major new work starring Academy Award winning actress Julianne Moore in the title role. Written by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony-nominated playwright Sarah Ruhl (In The Next Room), this high profile off-Broadway production is directed by British director Les Waters, and brings to the stage a reimagining of the classic Greek myth of Phaedra, a princess from Crete who would face the fallout of falling in love with her own stepson.

What Is It About?

In Sarah Ruhl’s retelling of the story from Greek mythology, the Cretan princess Faydra takes center stage in a tale of forbidden desire and its consequences. When the goddess of love, Aphrodite, curses Faydra with an arrow, she is left consumed by a devastating lust for her soon-to-be-stepson Hippolyte. Expect a bold production from Ruhl, bridging this ancient tale with the deeper examination that contemporary theatre so often blesses us with.
