Why see Ragtime?

The Acclaimed Musical Returns

Nominated for 11 2026 Tony Awards!

One of the most acclaimed musicals of modern times is back on Broadway following its New York City Center run! The winner of four Tonys during its 1998 Broadway debut production, Ragtime is a grand diorama of early 20th-century American life, featuring appearances from some of the most important figures of the day, including Houdini and Henry Ford, all shot through with the music of ragtime. Joshua Henry, Caissie Levy, and Brandon Uranowitz will reprise their roles, while Lincoln Center Artistic Director Lear deBessone helms the production.

Memorable musical theatre classics, including "Wheels of a Dream," "Back to Before," and "Your Daddy's Son,", punctuate the intersecting story of an African-American family, a Jewish immigrant family, and a wealthy suburban WASP family. Brought together in the aftermath of a crime, they interact and influence each other with unexpectedly emotional results.

What is Ragtime About?

Ragtime paints a picture of American life at the beginning of the 20th century by weaving together the stories of three distinct families. The upper-class white Protestant family lives in New York; the African-American family, headed by ragtime musician Coalhouse Walker Jr., and the poor European migrants, Tateh and his daughter, who arrive at Ellis Island looking for a better life. This patchwork of characters cross paths and overlap with each other in surprising ways, their seemingly disparate strands coming together in a profound depiction of the American experience.
