Chekov's classic the Seagull gets a contemporary makeover
The New Group brings their 2019/20 season to a rousing close with a brand new adaptation by rising theater mover-and-shaker Thomas Bradshaw, who last lit up the Pershing Square Signature Center stage with his insightful bedroom drama Intimacy in 2006. This time, Bradshaw turns his writing talents to Chekov's ironic comedy masterpiece The Seagull, breathing new life into the classic in partnership with award-winning director Scott Elliott.
Bradshaw's revamp transports the on stage action from a farm in late 1800s Russia to a holiday house in present day upstate New York. A group of well-meaning theater people seek refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city there, but it seems that no peace is to found amidst their rampant ambitions, self-absorption and simmering rivalries. Who knew not much about the human condition has changed over the centuries..?!
