Head down to the old East End of London town, in this delightfully quirky musical comedy by Noel Gay, with a revised book by British satirist Stephen Fry. Not seen in New York for over 30 years, this charming walk down memory lane first premiered in London' West End in 1937, before being adapted to film in 1939, as The Lambeth Walk, after the famous dance. With two revivals, the most recent in 1984, it won two Olivier Awards and ran for an astonishing eight years in London.
Centered around a unapologetically unrefined Cockney man named Bill, we follow his hilarious journey into the upper echelons of society when he learns that he is 14th heir to the Earl of Hareford and set to inherit a fortune and huge country pile. However, this comes with strict condictions; Sir John and the Duchess must approve of him, and with a little grooming, soon looks the part. But then he is hit with another ultimatum; he must forgo his true love Sally, a fellow Cockney. Outraged, Bill turns down the offer of wealth and titles to be with his love; but what if Sally were coached to become a lady?
