Yo-Yo Ma Lends His Bow To Tchaikovsky's Sixth

Child prodigy turned adult virtuoso, Cello player extraordinaire Yo-Yo Ma has held audiences in rapture with his stunning technique and emotive, lyrical playing since he first stepped onto the stage as a youngster. The 18-time Grammy Award winner joins the New York Philharmonic, as well as special guest conductor Long Yu and world renowned Pipa player Zhao Lin for a vibrant program featuring Tchaikovsky's passionate Symphony No. 6.

Following Musorgsky's Prelude to Khovanschina and the US premiere of Zhao Lin's own Concerto for Pipa and Cello, Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony brings the evening to a rousing close. Often hailed as his greatest work, the symphony became one of the defining compositions of the romantic era. Written from his death bed, the 6th is a riveting emotional journey of soul-stirring proportions, spanning the melancholic lows and effervescent highs of life. Tchaikovsky passed away 9 days after its premiere in Saint Petersburg in 1893.
