Spend a Saturday afternoon in the company of Estonian conductor Paavo Jarvi and New York Philharmonic as they take you on the incredible journey that is Sibelius' Fifth Symphony. Inspired by the glorious flight of 16 swans, it has arguably one of the greatest finales in classical music history, climaxing in six resounding hammered chords and a blaze of glory.
Finished in 1919, the symphony-in-three-parts was commissioned by the Finnish government to celebrate the late-romantic composer's 50th birthday. Already a national hero, the work received an overwhelmingly positive reception - it is said the audience shrieked for joy at its debut concert.
After the performance, the orchestra will round off the afternoon with an insightful Question and Answer session.
