Finnish conductor Susanna Malkki leads the New York Philharmonic through two masterpieces by Richard Strauss and Maurice Ravel in Metamorphosen and La Valse respectively, as well as the New York premiere of Luca Francesconi's Spanish-infused Duende: The Dark Notes.
Written in 1945, Strauss' Metamorphosen is a reflection on the devastation of World War II. Scored for 23 solo strings, the masterful work creates a somber yet achingly beautiful sonic landscape. Ravel's La Valse sonically depicts a decadent Viennese waltz spiraling into chaos, with orchestrations shrouding listeners in a hypnotic dance of ecstasy and destruction.
