Jaap Van Zweden begins his tenure as the NY Phil's 26th Music Director
Marking his inaugural season as the New York Philharmonic's brand new Music Director, pre-eminent Dutch conductor Jaap Van Zweden helms a special Opening Gala Concert featuring Grammy Award-winning piano virtuoso Daniil Trifonov. An electrifying program of Ravel, Stravinsky and Ashley Fure kicks off what is sure to be a groundbreaking tenure for the world renowned ensemble's 26th leader.
The evening begins with a brand new world premiere by American composer and installation artist Ashley Fure, whose sound art explores the act of music making and the kinetic movement behind it. Trifonov will then take to the stage during Ravel's Piano Concerto in G, a jazz-soaked, light-hearted affair filled with the French composer's masterful melodies. The evening closes with the vibrant aural colors of Stravinsky's ballet masterpiece The Rite of Spring.
