In a series of dazzling, improvised cadenzas, Mr. Ozone showed how much classically grounded technique can expand a jazz pianist's freedom: It opens that many more musical worlds to roam.

The New York Philharmonic's Bernstein Festival continues with this rousing programme of the Gershwin classic Rhapsody In Blue and Bernstein's union of classical music and jazz Prelude, Fugues and Riffs, as well as his iconic tone poem The Age Of Anxiety. No stranger to collaborations with the NY Philharmonic, foremost Gershwin interpreter and world renowned Japanese jazz pianist Makoto Ozone will join the orchestra, helmed by former Music Director Alan Gilbert.
Dedicated to the memory of Benny Goodman, Prelude, Fugues and Riffs is a triptych for solo clarinet and jazz ensemble combining big band swing and the improvisation and syncopation of jazz with the hallmarks of classical music. While rhthym certainly holds the spotlight in this work, melody is not forgotten - the melodic composition is considered to be one of Bernstein's finest.
