Daddy Long Legs

Daddy Long Legs at The Davenport Theater

Why see Daddy Long Legs?

Off-Broadway Premiere

Regional favourite Daddy Long Legs at last comes to New York this year. Based on the 1912 novel by Jean Webster, Daddy Long Legs follows orphaned girl Jerusha Abbott as she's sent off to college by a mysterious benefactor.

Bowling over critics wherever its gone, Daddy Long Legs is a sweet, rags to riches tale, with subtly drawn themes of independence and self-discovery.This two-person musical boasts a book by multiple Tony Award winner John Caird (Les Miserables) and a score by Paul Gordon (Jane Eyre). Megan McGinnis, who originated the role of Jerusha back in 2009, stars alongside Paul Alexander Nolan, in his Off-Broadway debut.

What is Daddy Long Legs About?

In turn-of-the-century New England, a mysterious letter arrives for budding writer Jerusha Abbott, the oldest occupant of the John Grier Home for orphans. It contains an extraordinary proposal: the author of the letter, a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous, will pay for Jerusha to go to college, on the one condition that she write him a letter once a month, to practise her writing skills.

So Jerusha heads off to school and every month she dutifully communicates her literary discoveries and her burgeoning sense of independence. The question is, will she ever discover the identity of her mysterious patron?

Wonderful actors, wonderful play

This is a sweet, small story of two people connecting. One is shy, finds real connection difficult. The other is just bursting with possibilities and is given a chance to blossom. The story is well staged. But really, this play is about the two actors. Megan McGinnis is just a theatrical treasure, and the small, comfortable Davenport Theater is the perfect place to hear her clear, strong voice and see her subtle expressions. While i'm sure the production would prefer to be in a bit bigger venue, go see it now and get up close to this captivating actress. Paul Nolan has the challenging role of being the "older man", frustrated in his interest and evolving passion for the woman he knows mainly through letters. His voice is excellent, and the evolution of his character is quite believable. This is the perfect play for girls on the cusp of womanhood, and for anyone who has a soft spot for two worthy people connecting in an unlikely way. I highly recommend this play. ... Read more
