Hand to God

Why see Hand to God?

this TONY NOMINEE closes january 3rd!

Following a tremendously successful run at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2014, Robert Askins' black comedy about a devilish puppet let loose on a Christian theatre group makes its Broadway bow this March. Directed by Studio 42 Artistic Director Moritz Von Stuelpnager, Hand to God is a by turns hilarious and disturbing piece which garnered glowing critical notices during its off-Broadway staging. Variety praised it as "screamingly funny" while The New York Times' Charles Isherwood called it a "terrific, scary-funny play".

The entire cast returns for this transfer, with Steven Boyer (Orange is the New Black) in the lead role of Jason, a performance which won him an Obie Award in 2012. Playing alongside Boyer is Geneva Carr (Rescue Me), Marc Kudisch (9 to 5), Michael Oberholitzer and Sarah Stiles. Bob Saget joins the cast from November 3 in the role of Pastor Greg for the remainder of the run. Tony Award-winning Costume Designer Boewulf Borritt (Act One) once again creates the church rec room in which the action takes place.

What is Hand to God About?

In the small town of Cypress, Texas, Margery is cajoling her group of unwilling participants to rehearse for an upcoming Christian puppet show. Among the reluctant volunteers is her son Jason, a shy delicate creature who harbors a secret crush for another of the puppeteers, Jessica. The rehearsal is thrown into chaos when Jason's hand puppet Tyrone seemingly takes on a life of his own, becoming a foul-mouthed, and increasingly viscous alter ego whom Jason is unable to control.

Reviews

Our review

Rude, crude, funny

Hand To God is a fantastic play that challenges the audience with its bold themes of faith and family. My gut feeling before the show was that the play would be blasphemous and lack substance, however it's quite the contrary!
