Stereophonic Dominates the 2024 Drama Desk Awards with Seven Wins
Off-Broadway’s Dead Outlaw Leads in Nominations
A dazzling celebration of the finest achievements in New York theater, The Drama Desk Awards spotlight electrifying performances and groundbreaking productions across Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway stages. This year, the awards ceremony took place on June 10 at NYU Skirball Center and was hosted by Broadway stars Sutton Foster and Aaron Tveit, and it was certainly one to remember!
The ceremony featured a star-studded lineup of presenters including Shoshana Bean, Laura Benanti, and Matthew Broderick. Kelli O'Hara performed a special tribute to Andr Bishop of Lincoln Center Theater, who received the first William Wolf Award. Nathan Lane was honored with the Harold S. Prince Award for lifetime achievement in theatre.
The standout of the evening was the play Stereophonic, which bagged a total of seven awards, including the prestigious Outstanding Play for playwright David Adjmi and Playwrights Horizons. The play, which had its Off-Broadway debut at Playwrights Horizons and then moved to Broadway, garnered the highest number of wins for the night.
Audible Theater's Dead Outlaw claimed the title of Outstanding Musical. Although Water for Elephants had a noteworthy evening with four awards, including Direction of a Musical for Jessica Stone and a three-way tie for Sound Design of a Musical, Dead Outlaw was the most nominated show, leading with 11 nominations.
