Robert Downey Jr is exchanging the Iron Man suit for the stage in Ayad Akhtars new stage play McNeal'. The production follows iconic writer Jacob McNeal's relationship with his son and his all-consuming fascination with Artificial Intelligence.

This announcement comes shortly after Roberts's first Oscar win for his role in Christopher Nolan's box office hit Oppenheimer'. Although he hasnt ever been on Broadway, Robert Downey Jr once joined Jane Krakowski on an off-broadway production of American Passion' in 1983.

Robert Downey Jr rose to fame in the 1980s, but it wasn't until his 2008 role in Marvel's Iron Man that he became a household name. Since then he has become a staple member of the Marvel Universe as well as major roles in Sherlock Holmes and Oppenheimer.

McNeal is written by Ayad Akhtar, who boasts an impressive repertoire including the 2016 Tony-nominated Junk', the 2012 Pulitzer-winning Disgraced', and is currently working on the Broadway adaption of the hit movie La La Land. The play is also under the direction of Tony-winning Bartlett Sher, celebrated for his renditions of South Pacific' in 2008 and To Kill a Mockingbird' in 2018.

The show is set for a special run at the Lincoln Center Theater, from September to November.
