Broadway's Lempicka Announces Closing Date For May
The Show Gained 3 Tony Nominations This Week
The producers of the three-time Tony-nominated musical have announced the show will run until May 19 2024. The show only opened on April 14 and was not an immediate hit with critics nor theatre-goers alike, however, this week Lempicka was nominated for three Tony awards including; Best Leading Actress In A Musical, Best Featured Actress In Musical, and Best Scenic Design Of A Musical.
Directed by Rachel Chavkin and written by Carson Kreitzer, Lempicka is set over a monumental forty-year time span, and follows the celebrated Polish-born painter from the bloody Russian Revolution to the seemingly safer streets of early 1900s Paris and California thereafter. Her comfortable life is overturned when the Cheka, the Russian secret police, arrest her aristocratic husband in the middle of the night. After securing his release from prison, they flee for the French city. Penniless, the determined Tamara claws her way out of poverty by becoming a celebrated portraitist, with a distinctive style all of her own. Her rise to the upper echelons puts her in the path of a new muse, the bohemian free spirit Rafaela, and the artist is torn between passion, duty, and the desire to leave her mark on the world.
The cast for Lempicka includes Eden Espinosa as Tamara De Lempicka (Tony nominated), Amber Iman as Rafaela (Tony nominated), Andrew Samonsky as Tadeusz Lempicki, George Abud as Marinetti, Natalie Joy Johnson as Suzy Solidor, Zoe Glick as Kizette, Nathaniel Stampley as the Baron, and Beth Leavel as the Baroness. With the incredible set design from Riccardo Hernandez and Peter Nigrin, who have been nominated for a Tony for their work, along with music by Matt Gould and choreography by Raja Feather Kelly
