Reviews are in for A Strange Loop

Critics and audiences are raving about this Pulitzer Prize-winning new musical

The brand new musical finally opening on April 26th at Broadway's Lyceum Theatre after a delayed opening night thanks to COVID. It was worth the wait, however, with the Pulitzer Prize-winner showing audiences that it is well deserving of all the hype it has earned so far.

The New York Times wrote "it seems as if there is no measure of praise that could be too much" and praised the production for it's ability to "allow a Black gay man to be vulnerable onstage without dismissing or fetishizing his trauma, desires and creative ambitions". TimeOut wrote that A Strange Loop is "screamingly funny and howlingly hurt, and it's unmissable."

Deadline had praise for A Strange Loop's lead, Jaquel Spivey, writing that he inhabits the role of Usher, an aspiring Black playwright, "so comfortably inhabited you'd be forgiven for assuming he wrote it". Given the play's actual creator, Michael R. Jackson's, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for it, this is high praise indeed. Looks like Spivey is one to watch on the Broadway stage!
