What Did The Critics Think Of MJ?

The verdict is in, the critics have spoken.

With a score made up of some of the greatest songs in pop history, a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and choreography and direction by Tony winner Christopher Wheeldon, surely MJ has all the ingredients for success? Let's find out...

Whilst some critics let the musical be a standalone experience of celebrating Michael's life achievements, leaving all the baggage of what they know at the door and walking in with an open mind, others still hold onto the allegations which are still very present.

CRITICS REVIEWS

"As with other stand-outs of the jukebox genre Ain't Too Proud, Jersey Boys, Tina Nottage's book and Wheeldon's direction/choreography tap into collective nostalgia without sacrificing of-the-moment vitality."
- Deadline

"MJ, like its subject, is captivating and hard to shake. The musical takes audiences through Jackson's life and catalog with impressive ease, expertly chronicling major milestones."
 - The Hollywood Reporter

"All, however, are hobbled by an indecisive script the documentary plot and backstory are clumsily combined, and the cartoonish characters are straight outta "Scooby-Doo" - and low-energy, unattractive staging".
- NY Post

"Myles Frost, who is making his Broadway debut, nails Michael Jackson's gentle smile and his high-pitched speaking voice. If he comes off when he's talking as something of a cypher, so did Michael Jackson. What counts is how exciting he is when he's singing and, especially, dancing."
- New York Theater

"It's easy to see how an Estate full of lawyers dreamed this production up, as its production's go-to solution is to throw money at a problem until it goes away. So we have near-constant costume changes (by Paul Tazewel), a blaring sound design (Gareth Owen), and expensive looking lighting and projections (by Natasha Katz and Peter Nigrini, respectively) overstimulating the senses, in case anyone should raise any objections to the material."
- Theatrely

I left the theater entertained, but not convinced I had really seen the man in the smoke and mirrors.
-Time Out

"MJ" is a jukebox musical that is nothing but the late King of Pop's greatest hits. Would Jackson himself approve of such a sentimental journey? More to the point is that his estate has approved it."
- The Wrap

Overall, it seems MJ is a musical that will make you feel one of two ways depending on how you approach it.
