The Reviews For You Got Older Are In!

Kevin, February 25th, 2026

The Off-Broadway revival, directed by Anne Kauffman, opened on 23 February

Reviews are in for You Got Older, the Obie Award-winning play by Clare Barron, now running at the newly reopened Cherry Lane Theatre!

Leading the company is Alia Shawkat as Mae, a young woman who returns to her small Washington hometown after the collapse of her career and relationship. As she navigates caring for her ailing father, played by Tony nominee Peter Friedman.

Mae's unexpected encounters begin to blur the lines between reality and fantasy in Barron's tender, offbeat exploration of illness, intimacy, and human connection.

You Got Older Critic Reviews

"Barron presses on tender bruises, loss, comfort, fear, concernin ways that often leave you laughing with a strange pleasure of recognition. But if you find yourself in tears by the end, the play can handle that, too. It holds you in a bracing embrace, as close as it needs to, which is to say, too close." - Time Out New York

"The awkwardness between father and adult daughter is a sound insight, but did we need quite so much banal chatter? These scenes might have been more effective had Shawkat portrayed Mae more expressively; as less of a cipher." - New York Theater

"By the end of the play, this critic could've used a baseball cap. You Got Older remains a timeless meditation on adulthood in all its messiness, pain, and sometimes humor and it is well worth seeing." - New York Theatre Guide

"Characters move in and out in a gorgeous dramatic fugue so we get a sense of the harmonies and dissonances in this family. When dad is left alone with son Matthew (Misha Brooks giving us little glimpses of a rich internal life as he stuffs his face) he sneaks his father an illicit cup of water, revealing the secret conspiracy of men in a family in which they are quite outnumbered. Not only do these actors looks like a real family, they feel like one too a tribe that, despite its professional-class dispersal is still bound by powerful ties." - Theatemania

"Kauffman's handling of the script provides plenty of revelatory moments: An erotic dream that takes a sinister turn when the fantasy lover displays his lesions; Dad entering, obviously weakened by surgery; a wittily staged bit of hospital room crosstalk; a midnight tryst for Mae and Mac derailed by an anguished Dad, knocking on her bedroom door; and a final, foot-stomping dance at Jenny's wedding, a defiant gesture of joy, that ends in a stark recognition of loss. You Got Older looks like a delicate piece, but don't be fooled: It captures the evanescence of life, and the grief we leave behind as a parting gift for those who love us. It's a remarkable piece." - Light & Sound America

"You Got Older feels similar to a slew of new works, with comfortable, naturalistic scenes mixed with heightened, lyrical dreamscapes like Geffen Playhouse's Sylvia, Sylvia, Sylvia and Playwrights Horizons' The Dinosaurs. But this play isn't new, and its stylistic familiarity is a sign of Barron's influence on the modern playwriting landscape. For Mae, the future is unclear, but if one thing is certain, it's that Barron is always a writer to watch." - 1 Minute Critic
