The 2020 Tony Nominees

The nominees for this year's awards are out!

To say it's been a weird year is an understatement. It's been a CRAZY year, crazier than a revival of that Spiderman musical. Some Broadway shows have had to shut before their opening night, and many more haven't even been able to open at all. But, as the eternal entertainment adage goes, the show must go on! And so it shall. Well, the Tony Awards specifically. Rather than let a global pandemic halt the prestigious annual ceremony, for right or wrong it's going ahead! Albeit with only a handful of nominees, which has made for some VERY interesting categories...

Firstly, if you're a betting person, I'll suggest putting ALL your money on Aaron Tveit for "Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical". Why? Well he's literally the only nominee! And secondly, you may find the nominees for "Best Original Score" surprising - there's not a single musical nominated. That's right, the "Best Original Score" nominees for 2020 are all plays. Though that's probably because the only three musicals contending are all jukeboxes!

Will it get any weirder? We'll have to watch the live - online! - ceremony later this year to find out! In the meantime, here are some of the nominees. Leading the way for musicals are Jagged Little PIll with 15 nominations and Moulin Rouge! with 14. Slave Play is the most nominated play with 12.
