Rachel Tucker swaps the West End for Broadway

Reprising her Olivier-nominated run as pilot Beverly Bass on the Great White Way

Following rave reviews and an Olivier-nomination for her turn as the pioneering pilot Beverly Bass in Come From Away in London's West End, Rachel Tucker flies across the pond to bring her performance to audiences on Broadway this spring.

Bass, who became the first female captain of a commercial plane in 1986, features heavily in Irene Sankoff and David Hein's Tony-winning musical. Becoming one of the  'Come From Awayers' after her plane was one of the 38 ordered to land in the tiny Newfoundland town of Gander on the morning of September 11, 2001. Her song, 'Me and the Sky' is one of the soaring highlights of the musical, detailing her journey through the ranks of American Airlines to that terrible day. Tucker's performance drew rave reviews, with The Stage saying "she delivers it in a way that is utterly transfixing."

So don't miss Rachel, who has previously taken on roles in Wicked and The Last Ship, when she debuts in Come From Away at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 3, taking over from Becky Gulsvig, who plays her final performance on March 1.

What is Come From Away About?

Based on a true story, Come From Away follows the events of September 11, 2001, when, far away from New York, 38 transatlantic flights are grounded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland. With the US airspace closed, 7000 people emerge from the planes into a surreal scene, and despite almost doubling the town's population, are welcomed with open hearts, minds and arms.

Although the horrors of that day are all too familiar, this is a story of hope told from the perspective of a handful of passengers and Gander residents, who wholeheartedly welcomed the stranded travelers into their homes - and into their lives. Among the characters are American Airlines' first female pilot, a gay couple both called Kevin, and an Egyptian chef, who fears a frosty reception from the community - only to be proved wrong entirely. Weaving together all of their storylines, the show creates an affirming portrait of human connection in the most trying of circumstances.
