The Whipping Man

The Whipping Man at New York City Center Mainstage

Why see The Whipping Man?

Three men are left at a crossroads - a Jewish Confederate soldier who has returned from battle, and two former slaves, who were raised as Jews in his household. As the three men reunite to celebrate Passover, they uncover a tangle of secrets that might cost each man his freedom.

Three men tied by faith, bound by secrets.

See two-time Emmy® Award winner André Braugher (“Men of a Certain Age,” “Homicide”), alongside André Holland (Joe Turner’s Come and Gone) and Jay Wilkison (Rent, Rabbit Hole), in the New York debut of Matthew Lopez’s fascinating new play. Incredible

We saw the play in previews on Jan 16th. The play is exquisitely written, comical at times but always within the dark context, poignant, painful and piercing, extremely powerful and is a work thaty requires great and dedicated actors completely compromised to its essence and core. The younger actors are extremely gifted and play their parts with a lot of passion and energy, and Mr. Braugher shows once again in a period piece that he is one the most talented actors in America, period. He commands attention without asking for it, he glides through his part with no hiccups and with the full conviction which he has displayed from the beginning in "Glory" or like the character Frank Pembleton in "Homicide" which made him a household name. The crowd left stunned and impressed. The play is a tour-de-force and the acting in this version is no short of show-stopping in its own right. I highly recommend it! ... Read more
