Tom Hollander is hilarious in this mind-bogglingly entertaining Stoppard

Hot from the West End

Roundabout Theatre Company partner with London's Menier Chocolate Factory to bring this pleasurable revival of Tom Stoppard's bouncy historical romp to Broadway in Spring 2018. Original star Tom Hollander (The Night Manager, Pirates of the Caribbean) will reprise his performance as Henry Carr, a decidedly unremarkable consular clerk in 1917 Zurich and unreliable narrator whose memories form the basis for the play. Hysterically funny, somewhat educational and full of Stoppard's mind-bending literary and farcical genius, Travesties is a theatrical gem.

Dear Diary...

Based on the recollections of the lowly consular clerk, Travesties takes us on a deliciously irreverent journey into the pre-war society of 1917 Zurich. Iconic figures and fellow residents such as James Joyce, Dada pioneer Tristan Tzara and Lenin all feature in Carr's reminisces, centered around an amateur production of the Importance of Being Earnest. As Carr struggles to separate the plot of the play from his real memories, he begins to weave an intricate web of mistaken identities, misunderstandings and complex philosophies held together by witty repartee and whimsy.

First seen in 1974, Travesties went on to win the Tony Award for Best Play in 1976.

Expertly acted, pleasingly sung, and often visually splendid, it makes a good faith attempt to honor the show's history and intentions while also acknowledging the charged sexual politics of the moment
