The Survival of A Music Scene
Dominique Morisseau’s new music-focused play Mix and Master has its world premiere on Broadway. The MacArthur Fellow and multi-award winner’s latest work comes directed by Apollo Theater executive producer Kamilah Forbes and stars Tony Award-winning actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson alongside multi-Tony-nominee Kara Young. In a unique production featuring live DJ sets honoring the roots of hip-hop and jazz, the play is a tribute to the cultural impact and survival of music, records and the scenes that surround them.
When the last surviving record store in the Bronx is faced with the reality of its era ending, a young DJ is determined to challenge that fate. In a music-focused play, live DJs on stage help to immerse you in a show celebrating the crackle of vinyl and the exhilaration of beat-matching, as the shop becomes the scene of a fight for the survival of identity and culture. A thrilling exploration of the drive it takes keep a music scene’s heart beating.
