Why see The Imaginary Invalid?

“[Matthew A.J. Gregory’s] version of The Imaginary Invalid is Molière updated… the bedside circus surrounding Argan, a man with a mysterious illness, is truly big top–worthy.”
Ronni Reich, BackStage

THE IMAGINARY INVALID is the perfect send-up of our nation’s beleaguered healthcare system and the cure for the affliction from which we all suffer:  A malnourished sense of humor!

After a wildly popular presentation was cut short ironically due to illness, Deadline Productions is triumphantly remounting this new adaptation of Molière’s THE IMAGINARY INVALID in Manhattan’s The Cell Theatre this summer.

A contemporary re-imagining of Molière’s last play, this production satirizes today’s pill-popping culture and profit-driven health care system.  The play takes place in a swank Manhattan loft apartment, awash with art that’s now overflowing with pill bottles, bed pans and medical paraphernalia. The original musical interludes in the play are now replaced by faux pharmaceutical commercials which promote questionable drug treatments and their unpleasant side effects.

The story revolves around Argan, a wealthy and eccentric hypochondriac, who is plagued by a gold-digging wife, an insolent maid, a rebellious young daughter and an infestation of drug-peddling, incompetent doctors.  Argan is actually in fine health but is so doped up that the side effects alone have him convinced that he is dying.  Through a series of hilarious tricks and outrageous disguises, Argan’s fast-talking maid and exasperated brother work furiously to cure Argan of his true malady:  his doctors are the real disease.

What a surprise….and we loved it!

I love Dickens “Christmas Carol” and have enjoyed the Alley production for many years. My first time to see this production and what a surprise! It was a combination of tradition and energizing new components - both in production and scripting. The diversity of performers, the tidbits of humor, the intensity of the ghosts yet appropriate for young audiences. Watching the audience - they laughed, applauded the highlights and intently listened to the narration. We thought it was fabulous. Change can be challenging for those who value tradition - but this production reflects the diversity of Houston and it matters. ... Read more

Love the Christmas Carol

To @jerry everyone is always leery of change but change it always for the better. As for your comment, too much activity while changing sets?well it is LIVE theatre, duh. If stillness is what you want, go to stare at a picture @tiffany the principal of the show was totally captured! You list no value reason for your stupid complaints. Your onlycomment worth reading was,on the actors performed well, that was the true!! And shame on you for writing this nasty comment! Good luck finding another family Christmas tradition as amazing as this production.@disappointed,this was a wonderful twist on a holiday classic. The characters on stage while the story is being narrated is called LIVE Theatre (mentioned this above to Jerry as well). The only part of your comment worth reading was re: Mrs Dilbert,Who was a great character but as I said above, this is a new rendition. If boring is what you, husband, his parents are looking for, stay home and keep your negative worthless comments to yourself. ... Read more
