King of The Yees

King of The Yees at The Pershing Square Signature Center

Why see King of The Yees?

A Family Myster-Yee!

An uplifting play about modern life whilst honouring your heritage forms the base of this epic work by Lauren Yee. It's going to be a family reunion like no other, as King of the Yees heads to The Pershing Square Signature Center's Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre from 6 October to 15 November 2026!

Francis Jue, Jon Norman Schneider, Maureen Sebastian, David Shih and Kelly Marie Tran star in the Off-Broadway production, directed by Joshua Kahan Brody.

What's The Story?

Set in America's largest Chinatown in San Francisco, this play chronicles the conflict between patriarchal family values and the desire to live one's own life as a Chinese American woman; this comes to a head when her much-loved immigrant father goes missing one day, and a desperate search for him leads her into the heart of her heritage and culture, on the condition that he comes home.

The struggle between balancing traditional Chinese customs and traditions with a Western lifestyle is at the heart of many families in the Chinese-American community across the country. Rather than painting either culture in a bad light, Lauren Yee's emotional new work is a call to explore one's own heritage and culture, whilst enjoying life as an American. Her previous works include Ching Chong Chinaman, The Hatmaker's Wife and Hookman.
