Making a welcome return to Broadway in spring 2018 is Mark Medoff's 1980 Tony Award-winning drama, which also spawned an Oscar-winning movie in 1986. Transferring from Boston's Eventime Theater, which staged its production this in 2017, this drama stars Joshua Jackson (The Affair) and Lauren Ridloff (Wonderstruck), who are both making their Broadway debuts. Ridloff has received a 2018 Tony nomination for her performance, and both leads have been nominated for Drama League awards!
At the helm is Tony-winning director Kenny Leon, who in 2014 led A Raising In The Sun.
What is it about?
Following the story of a clandestine relationship between a deaf former student of a teacher of deaf pupils, Medoff's groundbreaking drama uses both the spoken word and sign language, making this a truly inclusive production. Originally written for the deaf actress Phyllis Frelich, it was based in some part on her relationship with her husband, Robert Steinberg. As well as finding success in New York, it also traveled to the West End in London, winning three Olivier Awards in addition to its three Tonys.

The drama also borne a feature film in 1986, directed by by Randa Haines and written by Hesper Anderson as well as input by Medoff. Carrying on the success of the original play, it garnered five Academy Award nominations, with a win for Marlee Matlin in the Best Actress category. It also co-starred William Hurt as the teacher whom she falls in love with.
