Why see Can I Be Frank??
Obie Award Winning Show
Developed at the legendary La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, Can I Be Frank? is a performance by Morgan Bassichis built around the archived material of the late Frank Maya. Maya was a trailblazing queer creative known for being one of national TV’s first openly gay comics whose life and career was tragically cut short by complications from AIDS in the mid-90s. Directed by Sam Pinkleton, who recently received the 2025 Tony Award for Best Director for Oh, Mary!, don’t miss this Obie Award-winning show’s return for a limited run.
What Is The Story?
Can I Be Frank? is a comical and heartfelt solo performance that explores the messy coming together of an ego searching for fame with a desire to honor a legacy. Wanting to look beyond themself for once, Bassichis dives into the life and work of Frank Maya, seeking connection with the predecessor who paved the way for queer entertainers before the AIDS crisis claimed his life.
