Sweet Charity

Why see Sweet Charity?

Sutton Foster Is sweet Charity!

Based on the book by Neil Simon, the Tony Award-winning Sweet Charity is back in New York just in time for its 50th Anniversary! Star of CW's Younger and two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Anything Goes) heads the cast as the eponymous Charity, an endlessly optimistic 'dancer for hire' who yearns for something better. One of Simon's lesser known works, this bouyant musical nevertheless boasts its fair share of iconic showstoppers, including 'Big Spender', which was later made famous by Shirley Bassey. Sweet Charity was last revived on Broadway in 2005, with Christina Applegate in the lead role.

50th Anniversary Revival

This 2016 New Group revival is directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman (Violet) while Primetime Emmy winner Joshue Bergasse follows in the footsteps of Bob Fosse (no easy feat) by providing the choreography. Among those joining the luminous Foster in the cast are Asmeret Ghebremichael (The Book of Mormon) and Tony winner Shuler Hensley (Oklahoma!).

What is Sweet Charity About?

The story of Sweet Charity follows Charity Hope Valentine, a gullible, hopeless romantic who has big dreams but seems to always give her heart to the wrong man. Trapped in the tawdry world of the Fan-Dango Ballroom - a taxi-dance-hall, where the girls are paid per song to dance with men - Charity aspires to greater things, and tries to free herself from the sleazy business of dirty cash.
