Set against real events which took place in Greenwich Village in 1976, Downtown Race Riot is a portrait of a single mother (played by Chloe Sevigny) and her son coming to terms with the racial tension of the 1970s, as a fatal riot rages outside their apartment. Written by Seth Zvi Rosenfeld (The Get Down, Handball) and directed by Scott Elliott (The Whirligig), it's a look back at an atmosphere of intolerance which is sadly not confined to an America of the past.

Making only her second appearance Off-Broadway, Chloe Sevigny's acting career began with her electrifying turn in Larry Clark's controversial movie Kids. Tagged as something of an 'it girl' through the 1990s, Sevigny has since built a hugely impressive list of screen credits to her name, including Bloodline, American Psycho and Love & Friendship.

What is Downtown Race Riot About?

In 1976, a large gang of men descended on Washington Square Park, intent on attacking anyone of color that they could find. In the ensuing riot, one man died and another lost his sight. Downtown Race Riot takes us back to the sweltering summer day, and into the apartment of single mother Mary Shannon, where her son and his Haitian friend are arguing about the violence outside their window, and where exactly their allegiances lie.
