Seagull: True Story

If Chekhov holds up a mirror to humanity, Molochnikov and Rarey smash it, reflecting a modern world fractured by political and emotional upheaval.

Why see Seagull: True Story?
Autobiographical Satire
Seagull: True Story is a new work created and directed by Russian actor and director Alexander Molochnikov with writer Eli Rarey, dramatising a chaotic real life attempt to stage the Chekhov classic The Seagull which quickly spiralled far beyond rehearsal-room drama. Drawing on themes present across Chekhov's work, the play is a comedic part-autobiography-part-satire, as well as a musing on the struggle for artistic freedom when those in power are bent on silence. What is the Story?
A director staging a daring reinvention of the Chekhov classic The Seagull finds his vision tragically undermined, as state control tightens and his artistic freedom is taken away. Forced to abandon his work and his home, he flees to the United States, hoping to rebuild his creative identity in a cultural landscape where he thinks he can finally be free. But he soon finds that the freedom to be truly creative must be continually fought for, wherever you land.
