What Is The Story?

This hilarious play-within-a-play centers on an ultra-progressive, well-intentioned theater company attempting to adapt The Diary of Anne Frank, seen through their own modern ideological lens. To address perceived power dynamics, the group recasts Anne Frank’s diary as an ultra-woke dismantling of the historical narrative, with Anne now an empowered pansexual Afro-Latin hip-hop performer named Anita, the secret annex’s inhabitants invariably queer, neurodivergent, non-binary, and/or third-wave-feminists, and the Star of David badges now replaced with pronoun pins. The resulting satire offers a wild, unfiltered ride through the viral arguments which raged on twitter in 2022, sparked by a user questioning whether Anne Frank’ benefitted from “white privilege”.
