A young American, Nikos has inherited a defunct mine that he plans to re-open with the help of Zorba, a spirited and cantankerous local, for whom life moves at its own pace. Unsurprisingly, Zorba proves to be an unsuccessful fixer, spending money for supplies on wine and belly dancers, much to the chagrin of his sweetheart Hortense. But Zorba is an anti-hero, the sort of man who can help navigate through life's choppy waters.
Though not the immediate choice for a Broadway musical, the tragedy of Zorba prevailed, winning the 1969 Tony Award for best musical against such luminaries as Hair. Based on Nikos Kazantzakis' best-selling novel of 1952, this new Encores! Concert Series outing is sure to a compelling and entertaining night out.
