The Red Shoes

The Red Shoes at New York City Center Mainstage

Why see The Red Shoes?

Bourne makes another New York premiere!

Making its New York premiere this fall, Matthew Bourne's utterly spell-binding dance adaptation of the classic British movie by Powell and Pressburger will draw both movie and ballet fans alike. Winner of two Olivier Awards, this latest Bourne triumph examines the price of fame, obsession and possessiveness through the eyes of a young ingenue dancer; the role of flame-haired Victoria Page will alternate between original dancer Ashley Shaw and New York City Ballet principal Sara Mearns. This stunning work was Matthew Bourne's first new production in four years, premiering at London's world-famous Sadler's Wells in December 2016 to sell-out performances and universal praise.

What to expect

This electrifying production reunited Bourne with some of his frequent collaborators; Lez Brotherston, lighting designer Paule Constable and sound designer Paul Groothuis. The brand-new score has been arranged byTerry Davies, from music by Bernard Herrmann.

Telling the story of a hopeful young dancer who hopes to make it into ballet legend, The Red Shoes draws parallels with the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale of the same name. Determined to be a star, Victoria is coached by the demanding impresario Boris Lermontov, who pushes her forward at every turn, eventually becoming possessive and jealous of her. When Victoria falls in love with the company composer, she is forced into an impossible position, which leads to heart-breaking and eerily preminiscient tragedy.
