The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin

The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin at New York City Center Mainstage

Why see The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin?

Celebrate #blackgirlmagic with Kirsten Child's musical!

A socially relevant musical that's both parts sweet and sharp, Kirsten Childs' 2000 autobiographical musical drama remains as topical today as it did 17 years ago! Following the journey of Viveca who always felt different from her white peers from kindergarten and all throughout her life, she moves away from suburban Los Angeles and her life as a dutiful daughter, to the bright lights of Broadway, hoping to make it as a dancer, all while facing prejudice and obstacles due to her face. Navigating the ever-changing politics of race and class, she finally learns to be herself in a world that is predominantly white-centered.

What's the story?

The battle with misogynoir as a black woman in America is still anything but a Broadway show for millions in America, and across the world. This bold and unapologetic examination into one such woman's journey has been critically praised for its sharp social commentary and tongue-in-cheek humor as we traverse the decades through Viveca's footsteps, growing up during the Civil Rights Movement, and trying to fit in by becoming a "chameleon" - fitting in wherever, and however she can. But what happens when she gets tired of wearing the mask, and just wants to be seen for her talents alone?

Music for the ages

This bold musical combines a plethora of musical styles ranging between Motown, pop and R&B to highlight Viveca's very own journey through growing up, including the popular number Sweet Chitty Chatty
