Chekhov's Acclaimed Drama Ivanov Comes To New York
A striking version of the 1887 drama 'Ivanov,' written by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov comes to New York City Center this June. The controversial and riveting Russian drama showcases themes of love, betrayal and friendship, all in the context of hard times and sacrifices.
The story about a government official whose wife is unknowingly plagued with tuberculosis, constantly brings up the concepts of human integrity, deceit and dishonesty. It delves into the lives of people and dissects their motivations. Since its creation, the play has had many adaptions, including a more lighthearted version from English playwright David Hare that premiered in New York and then went on to London.
The four-act drama was written in just ten days and after initially not liking how the play had turned out, Chekhov revised the piece and it has since become one of the writer's most insightful and best known works.
