Assassins

Why see Assassins?

Sondheim's Tony-winning musical arrives July

Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's Assassins makes a welcome return to the New York stage, as part of the NY City Center's Encores Off-Center season this summer. Helmed by Anne Kauffman of Marvin's Room, the jet-black Tony-winning comedy musical plays for a strictly limited engagement in July, and explores America's deadly history of violence, and obsession with politically motivated murder. From the successful to the failures, all 13 miscreants tell their side of the story.

A risky premise for a musical, surely?

Well of course, but being a Sondheim production, this really should go without saying. Cold-blooded killers provide the chilling subject of this Tony winning musical namely those 13 wretched souls who trained their sights on past Presidents, and the four that were actually, but sadly, successful. Unusual stories to base a musical on, sure. But with typical Sondheim grace and wit, Assassins is likely to be one of the highlights in a year of political turmoil.
