A New Brain

Why see A New Brain?

Jonathan Groff stars - Ends this weekend!

Jonathan Groff stars in this Encores production about a composer (played by Groff) whose life is turned upside down when he discovers that he has a brain tumour. The musical is based upon the real-life experiences of its writer, Tony-winner William Finn, who battled a neurological disorder. It was in fact during his recovery period, that he began work on the musical.

Unlike Finn himself who won his two Tony Awards for Falsettos post-diagnosis, the central character in A New Brain (Gordon Schwinn) is a struggling composer whose day-job writing silly songs for a children's television show. His frustrations with having to face the reality that he may never achieve the creative height he'd always aspired towards, are only worsened by his friends, family and boyfriend who are simultaneously supportive and suffocating in the wake of his diagnosis.
