Moliere's comedic masterpiece updated by Lucas Hnath
A storied cast led by Matthew Broderick brings Moliere's 17th Century comedic classic back to the stage, in an updated adaptation from Tony-nominated playwright Lucas Hnath! Under the eye of Obie award-winning director Sarah Benson, Broderick performs alongside a multi-award-winning ensemble including Emily Davies (Is This A Room), David Cross (Arrested Development) Bianca Del Rio (RuPaul's Drag Race, Everybody's Talking About Jamie), Amber Gray (Hadestown), Ryan Haddad (Dark Disabled Stories), Francis Jue (Yellowface), Lisa Kron (Fun Home) and Iko Ufomadu (Ziwe).
First performed in 1664, Tarfuffe has proven to be Moliere's masterpiece with myriad revivals around the world each year. A fact that might have surprised the first critic of the show, King Louis XIV, who was so scandalised, he had the show banned after the first night.
In Moliere's classic, a wealthy man, Orgon, falls under the sway of Tartuffe, a pious-seeming con artist. As Tartuffe ingratiates himself deeper into the household with his fraudulent talents, seduction and good old-fashioned manipulation to get his hands on their fortune, the rest of the family races to reveal his true nature before it's too late.
