NYTW Usual Suspects collab in My Joy Is Heavy
My Joy Is Heavy is an intimate, genre-defying theatrical collaboration between Obie Award-winning duo The Bengsons, Tony Award winner Rachel Chavkin (Hadestown, Great Comet) and Steph Paul (How to Defend Yourself), building upon years of artistic trust between a community of groundbreaking creators selected by New York Theatre Workshop leadership, known as NYTW Usual Suspects. The production is the folk-punk duos exploration of life's liminal moments, originally put together during the pandemic and released on YouTube.
My Joy Is Heavy follows a young couple in a snowbound rural home, reeling from the silent grief of pregnancy loss. As the days meld into eachother and their isolation deepens, they confront the emotional weight bearing down on them, but in that stillness unexpected joy flickers to life.
