Mary Jane

Mary Jane at New York Theater Workshop

Why see Mary Jane?

Amy Herzog's New York premiere

A touching new drama focusing on the struggles of single motherhood lands at the New York Theatre Workshop this fall, penned by Pulitzer finalist Amy Herzog and helmed by two-time Obie winner Anne Kauffman. An all-star cast has been assembled for the production, led by Carrie Coon, of Fargo, The Leftovers, and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? fame. With an all-woman cast and crew, Coon will be joined by Liza Coln-Zayas of Between Riverside and Crazy, Danaya Esperanza of Men on Boats, Susan Pourfar of Tribes and Brenda Wehle of The Crucible.

What it is about?

First premiering at Yale Repertory Theatre in May, Mary Jane follows one woman's journey into building a close-knit community, as she cares for her chronically ill young son Alex and dealing with the hardship and mundanity that it entails. A compassionate portrayal of one woman's struggle against the odds, quiet moments of calm are punctuated with terrifying moments of activity when Alex has a seizure. Taking a non-linear narrative approach, we are invited into the world of hospitals, endless appointments and the perpetually stressed parent.
