La Cage aux Folles

La Cage aux Folles at New York City Center

Why see La Cage aux Folles?

Billy Porter Stars

The glittering doors to La Cage Aux Follies are open in this new production of the Tony Award-winning comedy musical at New York City Centre, directed by Robert O'Hara! The show, from recently crowned Tony Lifetime Achievement Award winner Harvey Fierstein and fellow Lifetime Achievement winner Jerry Herman (2010), features the decorated talents of Broadway royalty Billy Porter, with the Grammy, Tony and Emmy winner starring as Albin to head up an all-black cast.

What Is The Story?

While their extravagant shows at their St. Tropez nightclub are the talk of the town, owner Georges and his partner, Drag artiste Albin face the performance of a lifetime when Georges' son Laurent announces his intention to marry the daughter of a local right-wing politician. With the in-laws on the way, it's up to the duo to stage a 'straight' lifestyle, to fit in. But for whose benefit? With the charade wearing thin, it's up to Georges to confront Laurent about the scheme and stand up for himself and Albin in the face of bigotry.

True stereotypes of "New Yorkers" which do nothing to dispel the myths... A highlight was the drag queen interacting with the audience before the show... ... Read more

Terrific show!

Saw this show (08/20/10) on a whim ... sat up in balcony and had no complaints about our view. I don't think I'd take a child but merely because of the content. The show had me laughing from beginning to end, but also awed me with the dancing. While I'm not a supporter of guy rights, the underlying message gave legitimacy to the tenderness and validity of relationships, regardless of their structure. After the show we were outside of the theater when the cast exited and it was wonderful to see how appreciative and pleased the cast was with their audience. Mr. Hodge and Kelsey Grammer both took the time to sign audographs and pose for pictures. This, of course, added to the splendor of the night. If you want to see a terrific, funny show - you've got to go!! ... Read more
