It's 1997, and the stakes in international diplomacy have never been higher. The impossible is about to become reality in Kyoto, described by Beyond the Curtain as a production that "challenges, questions, and sometimes makes you uncomfortable". It reveals the stark truth of climate politics and brings the intense negotiations of the 1997 Kyoto climate summit to life in a way never seen on stage. After a knock-out premiere in Stratford-upon-Avon and a 2025 Olivier-nominated production in London's West End, New York audiences can now experience Kyoto as it comes to the Mizi E. Newhouse Theatre as part of Lincoln Center Theater's 2025/26 Season.
Written by Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson (co-founders of Good Chance) and directed by the visionary team of Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin, the play revisits the gruelling negotiations that led to the first-ever legally binding emissions targets, marking a pivotal moment in climate legislation that has shaped much of the environmental progress of our time.
