Shostakovich's blazing 1934 opera of blood and betrayal returns to the Met Opera House in this thrilling new production from Graham Vicks that reunites Eva-Maria Westbroek and Brandon Jovanovich who reprise their roles from the 2014 season. At its heart a satire, the opera is based on the novella of the same name by Nikolai Leskov, a story of suburban ennui turned deadly, it was a huge hit at its premiere before the Stalinist regime buried it under a mountain of political disapproval.
What is the story?
Combining tragedy with black humor, the story follows the misfortunes of a bored housewife Katerina. She takes a lover, Sergey, but is soon found out by her father-in-law Boris. Together, the couple murder Boris and Katerina's unfortunate husband. Death begets death when they are sent away to a prison camp...
