Metropolitan Opera - La Fanciulla del West

Metropolitan Opera - La Fanciulla del West at Metropolitan Opera House

Why see Metropolitan Opera - La Fanciulla del West?

Opera Meets The Wild West

One hundred and eight years since it made its world premiere at New York's Metropolitan Opera, Puccini's action-packed western opera La Fanciulla del West is back with its guns blazing! Featuring one of the most celebrated female roles in all of opera, the production welcomes esteemed Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek in the role of the feisty Minnie and German tenor Jonas Kaufmann in the role of her romantic interest Dick Johnson.

Based on The Girl Of The Golden West by American playwright David Belasco, the adventure is set during the Gold Rush of the mid 1800s. Puccini evokes the scope of the Californian landscape with sweeping orchestral arrangements, where gun-slinging heroine Minnie enters into a whirlwind forbidden romance with local outlaw Dick Johnson, an explosive love that angers the local miners and lands them in a whole lot of hot water.
