Christoph Willibald Gluck's four part opera returns to the Met! The French opera has been performed on stages the world over since 1779, and this production marks 105 years since it made its Met premiere in 1916! Iphigenie En Tauride is an epic tale, set in ancient Greece in the years before the Trojan war. Ben Bliss and David Portillo will share the role of Pylade alongside Kate Lindsey in the title role of Iphigenie. Etienne Dupuis will perform as Oreste, with Elchin Azizov as Thoas. Nathalie Stutzmann conducts.
Before the Trojan wars of Ancient Greece, mythological king Agamemnon sacrifices his daughter Iphigenia, so that his army may set sail to Troy. Iphigenie En Tauride reimagines Iphigenia's ill-fated life, placing her instead in the city of Tauride where she lives in secret, hidden from her family. That is, until her brother Orestes is banished there as well...
